If you live in an area that gets a lot of sunlight, then a DIY solar water fountain is a great way to take advantage of that free energy!

Not only will it look great in your yard or garden, but it will also provide the soothing sound of running water.

This is a great project for summertime, and it’s easy to do!

In this article, we will show you how to create a DIY solar water feature.

So without further ado, let’s jump right into it.

What Do You Need to Make a Solar Water Fountain?

Once you’ve chosen the perfect location for your solar water fountain, it’s time to start assembling your materials. You’ll need:

  • Solar panel: this is so obvious as you will need a source of energy that will power the water pump, so you will need a solar panel to convert the sunlight into energy that will power the pump.
  • Water pump: the pump is the most essential part as it takes the water from the container or source you have put it in and push the water in the air giving that charming view.
  • Some tubing: some pumps come with tubes to absorb the water from the water source. Also if the water source is quite far from the place you have chosen you will need these tubes to connect the pump to the water source.
  • Container for the water: a container may vary in shape but all do the same job which is to be the source of water. For example: if you really want to blend the solar fountain with the natural view around it you can use a ceramic planter and fill it with water or use bird baths that will be so charming and the birds will love it.

Now you have all the materials you need, you can now start assembling them to create your solar water fountain.

How to Make a Solar Water Fountain by Yourself?

Now it’s time to connect everything and get your solar water fountain up and running!

Step One: Prepare the Ground

There are a few things you need to level the ground before you can start building your solar water fountain. The first thing you need to do is find a level spot in your yard. If you don’t have a level spot, you can use a shim to level the ground.

Next, you need to remove any obstacles from the area where you will level to level the ground. Be sure to remove any rocks or roots that might be in the way.

Step Two: Place the Flower Planter or Pot on the Level Ground

After you have leveled the ground and made it suitable for the flower pot or planter place it in the ground and make sure it’s stable and doesn’t move or shake.

Step Three: Connect the Pump to the Solar Panels

To make your pump use solar power and be completely eco-friendly, you will just use some photovoltaic cells which will convert the sunlight into energy the pump will use to work. All you have to do is to connect the power source of the pump to some solar cells using some wires or in most cases, a solar pump comes connected to solar cells and is ready to go.

Step Four: Put Your Solar Water Pump in the Water

Now all you have to do is to put the solar pump in the water and connect the tubes to the water so the pump can work properly.

We recommend using a flat flower planter or pot so there is a base the pump can stay on. If you are using a deeper pot you can use some galvanized wires or strings and attach them to the pump and the pot so the pump stays on top and steady.

Finally, fill your container with water and place the solar panel in a spot where it will get plenty of sunlight. Now set back and enjoy the view.

Bonus tip: if you really want to add a beautiful view to your garden, you can use some small r rocks around your home or garden and put them in a flat ceramic planter around the water pump. This will give a very charming view of water running through the rocks. Just make sure the rocks aren’t blocking the pump and you are ready to go.
