There are hundreds of solar string lights on the market today, and sifting through them all to find the best ones can be quite a daunting task.

To save you the trouble, I’ve spent countless hours researching and testing over 50 models to bring you the crème de la crème of solar string lights.

After all this meticulous work, I’ve narrowed it down to these top solar string lights that excel in their respective categories.

So, without further ado, let’s dive in and see which solar string light is the right fit for you.

The Best Solar String Lights Selection

Toodour Solar String Lights

Key Features

  • Length: 144 ft
  • Charge Time: 6 hours
  • Run Time: Up to 8 hours
  • Waterproofing Rate: IP65
Toodour Solar String Lights

The Toodour Solar String Lights have 200 LEDs spaced equally on a 144 ft long string to ensure the light is evenly dispersed, creating a striking balance of ambiance and visibility.

This model also comes with 8 different lighting modes, ranging from combination, chasing/flash, in waves, slow fade, sequential, twinkle/flash, slo-glo, to steady on – so you can adjust the lights to your needs for different occasions.

The lights include a memory chip adds to the user-friendly nature of these lights, saving your last chosen mode and removing the need to reset it every time the lights are switched on.

I’ve been using these lights for about 5 years in my backyard, wrapping them around my old oak tree and draping them along the fence line.

The lights’ length is enough to extend across multiple sections of the yard, transforming it into an enchanting, illuminated space.

For instance, the “twinkle/flash” mode adds an element of surprise and whimsy, while the “steady on” mode creates a soothing and welcoming ambiance.

These lights can give up to 8 hours of illumination after about 6 hours of direct sunlight, which is impressive for its battery capacity.

I’ve tested the lights under various conditions, keeping close track of their performance.

In the summer months, with sunlight in abundance, these lights can charge in about 6.7 hours

On one clear July day, I turned them on at 8 PM for an evening cookout, and they kept the backyard softly lit until around 2 AM – a remarkable 7 hours.

As autumn rolled in and the daylight hours became fewer, the lights still managed to fully charge in roughly 7.3 hours

On a cozy October night, I switched them on at 7 PM and they continued to illuminate my yard until just past midnight, a solid 5-hour run.

Even in winter, they charged fully in approximately 9 hours

I recall one late December evening when I turned them on at 5.5 PM, and they held on, providing a warm glow until just past 11 PM

They carry an IP65 waterproof rating, which signifies their ability to withstand harsh weather elements, including heavy rain and snow.

Living in LA, California, I don’t encounter heavy snow, but I’ve witnessed them standing up to the torrential downpours.

In January of last year, we had a storm that dumped nearly 3 inches of rain in a single day, but they powered through the storm and provided their usual brightness without any hiccups.

One issue I’ve noticed with this model is its brightness. They’re suitable for creating a soft, ambient glow, but if you aim to light up a large outdoor space for functional visibility, a single solar string may fall short.

In such cases, I found that arranging the lights in several rows or combining multiple strings gave a more substantial illumination.

Despite this one gripe, I still think that the Toodour Outdoor Solar String Lights are an excellent choice for those looking to add a touch of charm to their outdoor spaces.

Pros

  • A long solar string of 200 LEDs
  • 8 different lighting modes
  • Built-in memory chip
  • Durable IP65 waterproof rating

Cons

  • Not as bright as some may prefer for visibility

Key Features

    • Length: 96 ft
    • Run Time: Up to 30 hours
    • Waterproofing Rate: IP56
    • Warranty: 1-year
SUNAPEX Solar String Lights

If you don’t feel drawn to the Toodour Outdoor Solar String Lights, the SUNAPEX Solar String Lights serve as an excellent alternative.

These outdoor lights span an impressive 96 ft and are furnished with 150 LED bulbs that emit a soft, warm amber glow.

They also come with 4 different lighting modes – steady light, slow flash, quick flash, and pulsating light.

You can control these modes with a single switch on the back of the solar panel, offering a seamless way to adjust the ambiance to your liking.

Last month was my anniversary with my wife, and to make it extra special, I decided to set up a surprise dinner on our patio.

I draped the lights around the railings and across the patio’s perimeter, precisely 86 ft of it, to create an inviting, cozy atmosphere.

Once the sun had set, I switched on the lights and selected the slow flash mode to add a nostalgic glow to our surroundings, creating the perfect environment for reminiscing and making new memories.

I also love the 5,200mAh battery that can hold up to 30 hours of charge.

This means that during sunny days when the solar panel can absorb maximum sunlight, they fill up in a mere matter of hours.

This pays off on gloomy days when sunlight is scarce. With such ample stored energy, the lights continue to operate seamlessly, despite the gray skies.

For instance, on our anniversary dinner night, the day had been particularly cloudy, with the sun hidden behind thick clouds.

However, thanks to the high-capacity battery, the lights continued to twinkle well into the night, setting the mood for our celebration without any interruptions.

For instance, during our anniversary dinner night, despite overcast weather, the lights shone brightly for over 6 hours, thanks to a fully charged battery from the previous sunny day’s solar intake.

The lights’ IP56 waterproof rating isn’t just a number on a spec sheet, it’s a promise that they can withstand the elements.

We had a rough storm last winter, and I had forgotten these lights outside but, to my surprise, not a single bulb was out.

SUNAPEX offers a 1-year warranty on these lights which provides added assurance and protection against any potential defects or issues that may arise during the first year of use.

And I can vouch for their customer service – quick, responsive, and genuinely helpful.

When I had a minor inquiry about the lights’ installation process, I reached out to SUNAPEX, and their customer support team provided detailed guidance, ensuring that I could set up the lights with ease.

One setback is the high price compared to some other outdoor solar string lights available on the market.

And I won’t lie to you, buddy, at first, I hesitated due to the price tag. But after experiencing the quality and durability of these lights firsthand, I can affirm they’re worth every cent.

All in all, I can confidently recommend the SUNAPEX Outdoor Solar String Lights due to their robust performance, exceptional durability, and the beautiful ambiance they create.

Pros

  • 150 soft, warm LED bulbs
  • Spans an impressive 96ft
  • Long-lasting battery (up to 30 hours)
  • Easy operation via switch control
  • Durable IP56 waterproof rating
  • 1-year warranty

Cons

  • Higher price compared to other models

Brightown Solar String Lights

Key Features

    • Length: 32.8 ft
    • Waterproofing Rate: IP65
    • Warranty: 1-year
Brightown Solar String Lights

Sometimes we might need something top-notch but are on a tight budget. This is where Brightown out Solar String Lights enter the scene.

These lights have a total of 40 LED bulbs housed within crystal teardrop casings, arranged on a 26.3 feet line with an additional 6.5 feet lead length, so the total length is about 32.8 ft

They also come with 8 lighting modes – you can choose between ‘In waves’, ‘Sequential’, ‘Slo-glo’, ‘Chasing/Flash’, ‘Slow Fade’, ‘Twinkle/Flash’, and ‘Steady On’.

Last Thanksgiving, I decided to give these lights a go. I used 3 sets, stringing them up across the backyard, draping them around the edges of our porch and across several tree branches.

The ‘Chasing/Flash’ mode was a particular hit with my young nephews and nieces who were fascinated by the way the lights seemed to dance across the yard.

Even my cat, Luna, couldn’t resist the allure of these twinkling lights. She spent a good portion of the evening darting about, trying to chase the moving light patterns, much to the amusement of our guests.

The lights’ solar panel is efficient, even though it’s rated at just 2V 170mA. It manages to harness enough solar energy to keep the lights going throughout the evening.

And despite being in November, when the days in LA start getting shorter and the sunlight isn’t as intense, the lights didn’t falter.

The IP65 waterproofing rate of these solar string lights indicates their ability to withstand both dust and water jets from any direction.

To test their durability, I did something crazy and left them up during one of LA’s notorious winter storms.

Throughout the 72-hour storm, we received about 2 inches of rain and wind gusts up to 45 mph

However, the lights powered on like champs and kept twinkling as if it was just another sunny California day.

One gripe I have is the battery capacity. While it’s enough to keep the lights going through the night under optimal conditions, on a cloudy day, the charge might not last until dawn.

Another thing is the brightness level. While the lights emit a soft glow, which is perfect for creating a serene ambiance, they may not meet your needs if you’re expecting a bright, strong light source.

I found that the ‘Steady On’ mode provided the most light, but it still had a softer glow compared to regular outdoor lights.

Despite these minor issues, these affordable Brightown Solar String Lights deliver, perfect for parties or enhancing outdoor settings with their magical glow.

Pros

  • 8 lighting modes
  • Efficient Solar panel
  • Durable IP65 waterproof rating
  • 1-year warranty

Cons

  • The battery can falter on cloudy days
  • Soft light might not suit all needs

Brightown Solar String Lights

Key Features

    • Length: 72 ft
    • Charge Time: 4-6 hours
    • Waterproofing Rate: IP65
    • Warranty: 1-year
Brightown Solar String Lights 1

The Brightown Solar String Lights are equipped with 120 LED bulbs that emit a warm white light, spaced along a generous 72 feet line.

This ample length, combined with the strategic placement of the LEDs, ensures a broad and well-distributed coverage.

A few months ago, my friend, Jane, decided to set up her engagement party on the roof of her three-story apartment building in downtown LA.

She wanted the evening to have a soft, fairy-tale-like glow, so I came across these Brightown Solar String Lights and decided to give them a try.

Jane’s roof spans about 1,500 square feet, and we figured we’d need multiple sets to adequately light the area.

We ended up purchasing two 2-pack sets, for a total coverage of nearly 290 feet which turned out to be a perfect amount without overwhelming the outdoor space or looking overly bright.

We arranged the lights along the perimeter of the roof, around the food and beverage stations, and even hung some overhead for a magical, starry effect.

As the sun set and the city lights of LA began to sparkle, the solar lights automatically flickered to life, casting a warm and welcoming glow across the party.

For the initial part of the evening, we chose the ‘Slow Fade’ mode to create a relaxed, intimate atmosphere.

But as the evening progressed and the music kicked up, we switched to the ‘Chasing/Flash’ mode, which added a fun and lively vibe to the party.

The lights can fully charge after only 4-6 hours of direct sunlight to keep running throughout the whole night.

On Jane’s big day, we had the fortune of experiencing a sunny summer afternoon in LA, allowing the solar panel to soak up ample sunlight.

As the party kicked off around 6 PM, the lights seamlessly switched on, and maintained their brilliance well past midnight, lasting for over 8 hours despite our initial doubts.

The IP65 waterproofing rate assures that the lights are dust-tight and protected against water projected from a nozzle from any direction.

I tested this personally when I left my own set of Brightown Solar String Lights out during an unexpected spring rainstorm.

Despite the downpour, the lights kept shining, undeterred by the weather.

Throw in the 1-year warranty, and you’ve got a recipe for peace of mind. So, even if you do face an unlikely issue with the lights, you have the assurance of knowing the manufacturer stands behind their product.

The only setback is that the bulbs are so small, which may not meet the expectations of those seeking a more striking light display.

While the small size contributes to the delicate, fairy-like quality of the light, it also means that each bulb emits a limited amount of light.

However, this minor drawback does not detract from the overall performance and aesthetic appeal of these solar string lights.

Pros

  • 120 warm white LED bulbs
  • Generous 72 feet length
  • 8 lighting modes
  • Efficient charge time of 4-6 hours
  • Durable IP65 waterproof rating
  • 1-year warranty

Cons

  • Small LED bulbs

Key Features

  • Length: 48 ft
  • Charge Time: 6 hours
  • Run Time: Up to 6 hours
  • Waterproofing Rate: IP55
  • Warranty: 2-year
Brightech Ambience Solar String Lights

The Brightech Ambience Solar String Lights come adorned with 15 old Edison-style bulbs that imbue a hint of nostalgia and vintage charm into the modern aesthetics of your outdoor space.

Stretching across a 48-foot string, these LED bulbs are placed every 3 feet, offering a delicate balance between illumination and decorative appeal.

Last year, I hosted a reunion for some old friends from our college days, back when we all lived in the same dorm and bonded over late-night study sessions.

We decided to meet up at my family’s rustic cabin tucked in the woods of northern Michigan.

To enhance the nostalgic ambiance of the gathering, I decided to use these lights, wrapping them around the wooden beams of the porch and trailing them across the branches of the nearby trees.

As twilight fell, the bulbs automatically came to life, casting a gentle glow that seemed to hark back to simpler times.

Despite their vintage look, these bulbs are highly durable and modern in design. They are constructed from shatterproof plastic, ensuring they can withstand outdoor elements and accidental damage without breaking.

To test this feature, I decided to leave these lights up throughout some of Los Angeles’ characteristic weather changes.

As anyone who lives in Southern California knows, while we enjoy plenty of sunny days, the region is also known for its sudden gusts of wind, known as the Santa Ana winds.

These winds are notorious and can sometimes reach speeds upwards of 40 miles per hour.

On one such day, I left these string lights on my patio, exposed to the mercy of these intense winds, curious to see if they could withstand such harsh conditions.

When I checked on them the next morning, not only were they all still hanging as I had left them, but each bulb was completely intact, despite the winds that had been battering them overnight.

The 2-year warranty that Brightech offers gives me peace of mind, knowing that I’m protected against potential malfunctions or defects.

In fact, I did experience a glitch 3 months into using the lights – one of the bulbs unexpectedly stopped working.

With just one quick call to customer service, a replacement bulb was sent my way and reached me within just 3 days, showcasing their prompt and reliable warranty service.

However, I do wish the lights had a higher waterproof rating. While they are rated IP55, which means they can handle jets of water from any direction, they may not perform as well under heavy rainfall or in really wet conditions.

I also wish the battery capacity was bigger – they can only work for about 6 hours under regular sunny conditions.

This can be a problem on cloudier or gloomier days when there’s less sunlight for the solar panels to absorb.

Overall, the Brightech Ambience Solar String Lights bring a perfect blend of vintage charm and modern durability to your outdoor spaces.

Pros

    • Vintage Edison-style bulbs
    • Easy Installation
    • Shatterproof design
    • 2-year warranty

Cons

  • 6-hour battery life under sunny conditions
  • Low IP55 waterproof rating

Key Features

  • Length: 105 ft
  • Charge Time: 6-8 hours
  • Run Time: Up to 12 hours
  • Waterproofing Rate: IP65
Joomer Solar Christmas String Lights

The Joomer Solar Christmas String Lights have an extensive reach, stretching a total of 105 feet, adorned with 300 LED bulbs.

This generous length and high bulb count make it perfect for decorating large Christmas trees, sprawling across extensive spaces, or creating grand light displays.

Last Christmas, I decided to give these lights a try at my home, which has a large outdoor space, measuring around 1,200 square feet.

I wrapped 2 sets of the Joomer lights around the edges of my roof, down the sides of the house, and throughout the shrubs and small trees in my front yard.

My kids were thrilled at the sight, their eyes lighting up as they saw our home transformed into a dazzling display.

They also loved changing the lighting modes, taking turns to decide whether we would have a soft glow or a lively twinkle each night.

The 2,000mAh battery capacity is more than enough to store ample energy during 6-8 hours to keep the lights running for up to 12 hours.

Last Christmas, on one of the shortest days of the year, the lights switched on automatically around 4:30 PM and they remained lit until just before 12 AM which is still really impressive.

The IP65 waterproofing rate offers a level of reassurance, ensuring that the lights can withstand different weather conditions, from light drizzles to heavy rain.

On Christmas Eve, we experienced a sudden snowfall – a rare event that brought about 4 inches of snow in just a couple of hours but the continued to glow brightly, casting a warm, festive glow.

Even the solar panel, dusted with a thin layer of snow, seemed to charge just as efficiently once the sun was up.

One drawback is the plastic stake provided to secure the solar panel into the ground.

During my setup, I found it to be somewhat flimsy and prone to breaking if forced into hard soil.

I ended up taking a trip to the hardware store to purchase a more durable metal stake to ensure the solar panel would stay firmly in place.

Despite this minor hiccup, I consider the Joomer Solar Christmas String Lights to be a great addition to any holiday decor. Their dazzling brightness and long-lasting operation truly set the scene for a memorable festive season.

Pros

  • 300 LED bulbs
  • Generous 105 feet length
  • 8 lighting modes
  • Run time up to 12 hours
  • Durable IP65 waterproof rating

Cons

  • Weak solar panel stake

Best for Weddings

Albelt Solar String Lights

Key Features

  • Length: 85 ft
  • Charge Time: 6-8 hours
  • Run Time: Up to 12 hours
  • Waterproofing Rate: IP65
Albelt Solar String Lights

The ‎Albelt Solar String Lights come in a 2-pack, each string extending 85 feet, providing a total length of 170 feet. This makes them an ideal choice for creating a charming atmosphere at large-scale events like weddings.

The 480 LEDs scattered across these strings emit a cool white light without being overly bright or overpowering.

Last year, I was tasked with the job of organizing a close friend’s garden wedding.

We wanted to create a magical setting for the evening reception, and these ‎Albelt Solar String Lights were my first choice.

I used three 2-pack sets of these lights, meaning a total of 510 feet of strings adorned with 1,440 LEDs, to create a starlit evening reception.

By hanging these lights from the towering trees, draping them over the garden arches, and looping them around the ceremonial gazebo, we achieved what we exactly wanted.

These lights boast 8 lighting modes which made us able to switch between the different modes to create the appropriate mood at different stages of the reception.

For example, during the dinner, we used the ‘steady’ mode to give a serene, peaceful ambiance.

As the evening progressed and the music started, we switched to the ‘twinkling’ mode, setting the stage for a lively and exciting dance session.

The lights can also keep working for up to 12 hours after a full charge of 6-8 hours during the day.

The wedding was on a fall day in mid-October, when the day was a bit shorter and the sun not as bright. Even then, the lights turned on perfectly at 7 PM as the sun set and remained lit until the end of the reception at 2 AM

My only gripe is that the bulbs are so small. Of course, they contribute to the delicate, twinkling effect, but if you’re looking for a more prominent or bold lighting solution, these may not meet your expectations.

In spite of this minor hitch, I believe the ‎Albelt Solar String Lights still offer an excellent balance between performance, versatility, and aesthetic appeal, making them a solid choice for outdoor decoration.

Pros

  • 480 LED bulbs
  • Generous 84 feet length
  • 8 lighting modes
  • Run time up to 12 hours
  • Durable IP65 waterproof rating

Cons

  • Small bulb size

How to Choose the Best Solar String Lights?

1. Cable Length

The cable length determines the area you can cover with the lights, and it’s directly proportional to the impact they’ll have on your space.

Therefore, it’s essential to consider the size of the area you intend to illuminate when selecting solar string lights.

If you’re decorating a small outdoor space, such as a balcony or a small garden, string lights with shorter lengths, like the 32.8 feet option of the Brightown Solar String Lights, could be ideal.

However, if your goal is to decorate larger areas or objects, such as a large Christmas tree or a sprawling garden for a wedding reception, you’d need lights with a longer string length.

For instance, the Joomer Solar Christmas String Lights with a total of 105 feet per set, or the ‎Albelt Solar String Lights which provide a total of 170 feet with two 85-foot strings, would be more suitable for such scenarios.

I’ve included various lengths in this guide, ensuring there’s something for every type of decoration, be it a small patio dinner or a grand outdoor wedding.

2. Style and Shape

Solar string lights come in an array of styles and shapes, each providing its unique aesthetic and lighting effects.

The style and shape of the bulb you choose will largely depend on the mood and decor you’re aiming for.

For example, traditionally shaped bulbs, often referred to as ‘fairy lights’, such as the Toodour Solar String Lights, emit a warm glow that’s perfect for creating a cozy, intimate atmosphere.

For a more retro and romantic vibe, the Globe-style bulbs of the Brightown Outdoor Solar String Lights can add an old-school charm to your space.

If you also want a sort of vintage vibe, the Edison-style bulbs of the Brightech Ambience Pro Solar String Lights would be the ideal choice.

These lights can transport your space back in time, creating a nostalgic and relaxing atmosphere reminiscent of a quaint European village or a rustic country barn.

2. Brightness Level & LEDs Number

The brightness level of solar string lights is largely determined by the number of LED bulbs on the string and the power of each bulb.

The more the LEDs and the higher the power of each, the brighter the lights will be.

If you’re looking to create a soft and cozy atmosphere, you might want to go for lights with fewer and less powerful LEDs.

For example, the Brightech Ambience Pro Solar String Lights come with 15 lower-power LEDs, providing a warm and intimate glow.

Conversely, if you’re looking to illuminate a larger area or create a lively and festive ambiance, you’d probably want lights with a higher number of more powerful LEDs.

A great example of this would be the ‎Albelt Solar String Lights, which boast a total of 480 high-power LEDs spread over a 170-foot string

Remember that while a higher number of more powerful LEDs means brighter lights, it doesn’t necessarily mean better.

Too much brightness might be overwhelming and create discomfort, while insufficient brightness might fail to provide the necessary illumination. Thus, it’s crucial to find a balance that suits your needs.

3. Charge Time

Nobody likes to wait forever for their lights to charge, especially when planning an evening event.

The charge time of solar string lights is determined by two factors: the efficiency of the solar panel and the capacity of the battery.

The efficiency of the solar panel tells you how much of the solar energy it can convert into electrical energy.

A more efficient solar panel will absorb and convert more sunlight in less time, reducing the charging duration.

Meanwhile, the battery capacity informs you about the amount of electrical energy it can store.

A battery with a higher capacity will take a longer time to fully charge. However, it will also keep the lights on for a longer period.

Therefore, you should consider the balance between charging speed and the duration of light that the solar string lights offer.

This is why I’ve tested every model on this list under varying conditions to ensure that all of them offer at least 1 hour for every hour of sunlight.

4. Run Time

There are two factors that affect the run time of an outdoor solar string light: the battery capacity and the number of LEDs.

The battery capacity, measured in milliampere-hours (mAh), determines the amount of energy the battery can store when fully charged.

The larger the capacity, the longer the lights will stay on.

On the other hand, the number of LEDs on the string also plays a role as more LEDs will drain the battery quicker, reducing the total run time.

You should also know that the advertised run time is the maximum time the model can last so take the numbers with a grain of salt.

So, I’ve tested every model I included in this guide to make sure that all of them offer at least 6-8 hours after a full charge.

5. Material & Quality

The material of the string lights will determine how durable and long-lasting they are.

Lights made from high-quality materials like heavy-duty wire or thick plastic can withstand various weather conditions, from the sweltering heat of summer to the biting cold of winter.

Additionally, they should be resistant to UV light to prevent damage or discoloration over time.

Next, the quality of the bulbs themselves is another factor to consider. They are made from either plastic or glass.

While plastic bulbs are more durable and shatterproof, making them an ideal choice for high-traffic areas, glass bulbs offer a warmer and more traditional glow.

The solar panel stake should also be strong enough to withstand being driven into the ground and resilient enough to stand up to various weather conditions without warping, bending, or breaking.

Connectors and fittings are another aspect of quality. They need to be robust and sturdy, capable of securely holding the lights in place.

Loose or weak connectors can lead to the lights falling or drooping, presenting potential safety hazards and certainly disrupting your lighting display.

I’ve tested every item on this list and made sure that they all meet a certain quality standard and won’t face any trouble during installation, shipping, or even regular use.

6. Waterproofing Rate

Solar string lights are often used outdoors and exposed to various weather conditions, which is why waterproofing is a critical factor to consider.

The waterproofing rate or ingress protection (IP) rating tells you how resistant the lights are to dust and water ingress.

The first digit of the IP rating represents the light’s protection against solid objects, like dust, while the second digit denotes its resistance against water. Here are some examples:

  • IP55: This rating means the lights have limited protection against dust ingress (no harmful deposits) and are resistant to water jets (6.3mm nozzle) projected by a nozzle against the enclosure from any direction.
  • IP56: These lights have the same dust protection as IP55-rated lights but can handle powerful water jets (12.5mm nozzle) projected by a nozzle against the enclosure from any direction
  • IP65: This rating indicates the lights are completely dust-tight. In terms of water resistance, they can handle low-pressure water jets (6.3mm nozzle) from any direction.

I don’t recommend you settle for less than an IP65 rating if you’re planning on leaving your lights outside year-round in varying weather conditions.

Any rating lower might not provide adequate protection against dust and water, which can significantly shorten the lifespan of your lights and lead to potential damage.

7. Warranty

You should always look for solar lights that offer some sort of warranty.

This is because, despite all your considerations and the manufacturer’s assurances, sometimes things go wrong. In such cases, a warranty can be your safety net.

It’s a company’s promise to stand by its product and assures you that it’ll repair, replace, or refund defective items within a specific timeframe.

That’s why in this guide, I’ve made it a priority to only include solar string lights that offer at least a 1-year warranty or a 30-day money-back guarantee
