Best Solar Motion Sensor Security Lights Selection

Editor’s Choice: TENKOO Solar Powered Security Lights

Features

  • Material: Aluminum
  • Brightness: 60,000 lumens
  • Lighting Angle: 120 degrees
  • Light Coverage: ‎3,437 ft²
  • Run Time: Up to 12 hours
  • Waterproofing: IP66

Our Editor’s choice for today is the TENKOO Solar Powered Security Lights which have 1,056 LED beads, collectively producing a staggering 60,000 lumens of brightness.

To put that into perspective, this brightness level can illuminate an area of up to 3,437 ft² with a 120-degree angle, akin to lighting up half a football field.

About 5 months back, I oversaw a project to improve security and visibility for a large caravan park spanning nearly 22 acres

The park is located 75 miles from the city’s electrical grid, presenting unique challenges for traditional wired lighting.

The park’s 200+ residents also had concerns about the lack of adequate illumination, which made navigating the park after sunset difficult and, at times, potentially hazardous.

In response to these challenges, my team and I opted for the TENKOO Solar Powered Security Lights.

We strategically installed 280 units around the park, focusing especially on the darker corners and high-traffic pathways.

When setting the control modes, we adopted a mixed approach.

The lights offer three control modes: light control, motion sensor, and remote control.

We set up light control mode for the 20 pathways, ensuring a consistent light source from dusk to dawn.

For the 15 less frequented areas, we opted for the motion sensor mode, which conserves energy while providing a layer of security by increasing brightness when movement is detected.

And for the central areas of the park, spanning about 10 acres, we used the remote control mode.

This model also offers a battery capacity of 66,000mAh which can provide a working time of up to 12 hours in constant light mode and up to 24 hours in motion sensor mode.

But we didn’t just take the manufacturer’s word for it. To verify these estimates, we designed a rigorous testing procedure that spanned over seven days.

Our results were slightly below the estimates but still more than enough to keep the park safe throughout the night.

We found that the lights installed on the pathways provided about 9 hours on average each night.

The motion sensor areas surpassed this, clocking in an average of 14 hours due to their intermittent operation.

And in the central areas where we used the remote control, we observed about 10 hours of service as we adjusted the light settings to suit different events.

This model comes with IP66 waterproofing rate, which indicates that it can withstand dust ingress and high-pressure water jets from any direction.

Our set of lights installed in the park has already handled a heavy rainstorm, and I vividly remember how they continued to shine brightly, undeterred by the pouring rain.

One downside was that the package didn’t come with a pole, so if you want to pole mount it, you’ll have to buy one separately.

The hefty price tag might be off-putting for some, but it’s worth every penny.

Despite these issues, I still see the TENKOO Solar Powered Security Lights as a valuable and reliable lighting solution, providing exceptional brightness, extensive coverage, and durable construction.

Runner up: LECLSTAR Solar Security Lights

Features

  • Material: ‎Plastic
  • Brightness: 4,000 lumens
  • Light Coverage: 1,600 ft²
  • Sensing Distance: 27 ft
  • Waterproofing: IP65
  • Warranty: Lifetime warranty

If you’re not a fan of the TENKOO Solar Powered Security Lights, our runner-up option, the ‎LECLSTAR Solar Security Lights, could be an alternative worth considering.

This model features 268 LED beads that disperse up to 4,000 lumens of 6,500K daylight brightness with a wide angle of 280 degrees

Each of these LEDs has a built-in reflector, designed to enhance the light dispersion and focus the beam, extending the coverage to up to 1,600 ft².

A couple of years back, I had a project to ramp up security at a 10,200 ft² warehouse, which was riddled with poorly lit corners, making it a target for thieves.

I installed a total of 10 units, positioning 3 lights at the entrance and exit points.

I remember the relief on the faces of the warehouse staff who could now safely navigate the premises during the dark hours.

I installed the other 7 lights along the sides of the warehouse to cover the entire perimeter and brighten the dark and unsafe corners.

These lights have 3 different lighting modes so you can choose the best that suits your needs.

At the entrance and exit points, we set the lights to ‘dusk-to-dawn’ mode, ensuring steady illumination for safe passage.

Along the warehouse sides, we set the lights to the motion sensor mode that can detect motion within a 160-degree angle and up to a distance of 27 feet.

Whenever movement is detected, the lights switch to full brightness for about 30 seconds, serving as a potential deterrent for trespassers.

I still remember one late-night inventory check when a light suddenly flared into brightness.

This unexpected light show did its job of startling an intruder, who took to their heels. It was exactly the kind of deterrent we were hoping for.

These lights also come with a generous battery capacity of 4,400mAh that can store enough solar energy to power the lights throughout the night.

To test this feature, we conducted a little experiment.

We chose a gloomy day with overcast skies and let the lights take their time to fully charge.

As the sun set, we activated the dusk to dawn mode, which triggered the lights to automatically turn on at dusk and remain illuminated until dawn.

Throughout the night, we tracked their working time and it was about 7 hours which is pretty impressive for these conditions.

The lifetime warranty also gives you peace of mind knowing that your investment is protected against any potential manufacturing defects or malfunctions.

My one gripe, though, was the plastic construction of the lights.

It held up well enough, but there was always a nagging concern about potential damage from rough handling or extreme weather conditions.

But all in all, I still think the ‎LECLSTAR Solar Security Lights are a brilliant option for those who need reliable, bright, and efficient security lights.

What We Like

  • 268 LEDs and 4,000 lumens output
  • Up to 1,600 ft² light coverage
  • 3 distinct Lighting Modes
  • The large battery capacity of 4,400mAh
  • IP65 Waterproof Rating
  • Lifetime warranty

What We Don’t Like

Best Bang for the Buck: AmeriTop Solar Security Lights

Features

  • Material: ‎Plastic
  • Brightness: 1,000 lumens
  • Light Coverage: 1,600 ft²
  • Sensing Distance: 26 ft
  • Waterproofing: IP65

When it comes to balance between price and performance, the AmeriTop Solar Security Lights hold their ground.

This model features 392 LEDs that boast up to 1,000 lumens in an even and powerful light spread, covering up to 1,600 ft².

Last month, I used this model on a friend’s rural property, which was plagued by intermittent nocturnal wildlife intrusions and he was on a tight budget.

The property was about 2,500 ft², so I used 2 of these lights, one at the front entrance and the other near the backyard patio.

As soon as we flicked the switch, the areas that had previously lurked in the shadows were suddenly alive with light, the radiant glow imbuing a sense of safety.

But the real test was yet to come.

This model features three settings: motion sensor mode, permanent on mode, and a blend of dim light/motion sensor mode.

Given our situation, the motion sensor mode seemed the most logical choice, allowing us to conserve battery energy while still maintaining a robust security measure.

One night, while we were enjoying a bonfire in his backyard, a curious raccoon ventured too close but the lights snapped on, illuminating the area with a startlingly bright light for about 30 seconds

The surprised raccoon scampered off into the darkness, leaving us at peace that those solar security lights were doing their job effectively.

The solar panel’s 20% conversion rate is more than enough to collect ample sunlight during the day, ensuring efficient charging of the built-in batteries.

After I finished installing the lights, I tested their efficiency, so I made notes on their charging and working time.

In most cases, the batteries were fully charged within 6 to 8 hours of sunlight exposure.

As for their working time, these lights provided operated with a fully charged battery for an average of 8 to 10 hours, depending on the lighting mode and activity level.

For instance, on a typical night with moderate activity and the lights set to motion sensor mode, they worked for approximately 9 hours

On another occasion, we switched the lights to the combined dim light/motion sensor mode and they provided illumination for about 10 hours.

The installation process of these lights was a breeze, requiring no special tools or technical expertise.

It took me only 20 minutes, starting from affixing the pillar hinge to the wall to finally securing the motion light to the mounting socket.

The light has a waterproof rating of IP65, which means it can withstand anything from scorching heat to heavy rainstorms.

My friend recently updated me during a particularly grueling heatwave and confirmed that the lights were still performing without a hitch.

However, I wish these lights had a long-term warranty. Although they come with a 30-day return policy, that doesn’t quite offer the same reassurance.

In a situation where these lights may be dealing with harsh weather conditions or even wildlife, a long-term warranty could offer peace of mind that they’re built to last.

But considering their low price point and the high level of performance they provide, these small grievances don’t overshadow the overall value of the AmeriTop Solar Security Lights.

What We Like

  • 392 LEDs and 1,000 lumens output
  • Up to 1,600 ft² light coverage
  • 3 distinct Lighting Modes
  • Easy installation process
  • IP65 Waterproof Rating
  • Lifetime warranty

What We Don’t Like

  • Plastic construction may be less durable
  • Lack of a long-term warranty, only a 30-day return policy

Best for Driveway: NIORSUN Solar Security Lights

Features

  • Material: Aluminum, glass & metal
  • Brightness: 10,000 lumens
  • Charge Time: 5-6 hours
  • Run Time: Up to 14 hours
  • Sensing Distance: 26 ft
  • Waterproofing: IP67
  • Warranty: 2-year

The NIORSUN Solar Security Lights have 864 LEDs that dazzle with up to 10,000 lumens of brightness, which ensure a perfect balance and even light distribution throughout your outdoor space.

I’ve been using this light for 2 years in my 80-foot driveway. I live in a suburban area with sparse street lighting, so traversing the driveway after sundown felt like navigating an obstacle course in the dark.

However, that all changed once I installed a single unit of this light at the driveway’s entrance.

Its powerful output covered the entire 20-foot width of the driveway, transforming it from a shadowy path into a well-lit route.

This model also features 4 lighting modes, which are:

  • Dusk to Dawn mode
  • Motion Detection mode
  • Timing mode
  • The combined Light Sensor + Motion Sensor + Timing mode

I use the Motion Detection Mode to conserve energy and enhance my home’s security.

With this mode, the light operates at 50% brightness but jumps to 100% when it detects any motion within 26 feet and then dims again within seconds without bothering any of my neighbors.

I also use the combined Light Sensor + Motion Sensor + Timing mode when I want precise control over the light’s activation and brightness.

It allows me to set specific times for on/off cycles, considering ambient light and motion detection.

This light’s battery is large enough to deliver up to 14 hours after only 5-6 hours of charging time, thanks to its large 26.4 x 17.5-inch solar panel.

I live in a region where the sun doesn’t shine as abundantly as one would hope – we average only about 3-4 hours of clear sun each day.

Despite this, it can still operate for about 8 hours each night, which covers the entire night.

I also tested its performance last December, when I fully charged the light and let it run on the Dusk to Dawn mode, and I made notes on its performance.

The light lasted from sunset around 6:15 PM until sunrise at 11:45 AM, that’s approximately 6 hours, which is still really good.

The light comes with two installation modes – you can mount it on a wall or a pole, depending on your specific requirements.

Given the layout of my driveway, I mounted the light on a 10-foot-high pole near the entrance of my driveway – this elevated position allows the light to cover a broader area.

I like the IP67 waterproofing rate, which means the light can withstand being submerged in 1m (about 3.3 feet) of static water for up to 30 mins

This doesn’t mean I’ve submerged it to test it out, but the light has successfully survived many heavy rainstorms, showing zero signs of water damage.

The 2-year warranty also assures me of the manufacturer’s confidence in the product’s quality and durability.

But I noticed that the supporting bracket of the solar panel was too short to tilt, leaving it nearly vertical and unable to catch much light.

The light boom mount is constructed from thin sheet metal that might buckle under pressure, so it might not handle high winds or icy temperatures.

I used an aluminum plate and robust U-bolts to combat these design flaws to ensure a secure mounting arrangement.

Despite these challenges, this light’s powerful brightness, high efficiency, and long-lasting battery life make it a highly recommended choice.

What We Like

  • 864 LEDs and 10,000 lumens output
  • 4 distinct Lighting Modes
  • Long run time for up to 14 hours
  • Easy installation process
  • IP67 Waterproof Rating
  • 2-year warranty

What We Don’t Like

  • The mounting system is poorly designed
  • A bit on the pricey side

Best for Side Entrances:  Aootek Solar Powered Security Lights

Features

  • Material: ‎Plastic
  • Brightness: 2,500 lumens
  • Sensing Distance: 26 ft
  • Waterproofing: IP65

Aootek Solar Powered Security Lights, with their compact dimensions of 3.9 x 3.8 x 8 inches, are ideal for side entrances and other small spaces.

But don’t let the small size fool you. These lights pack a punch with 2,500 lumens of brightness that can illuminate even the darker nooks and crannies of your property.

I have personally installed 3 units of these lights at each of the 3 entrances around my home – the side door, the back door, and the entrance to my garage.

Each area is about 100 ft², and these 3 units effectively cover this space around my property without leaving a dark corner or creating any annoying glare.

The Aootek Solar Lights also come with 3 operational modes:

  • Security Mode turns the light on and off when it detects motion
  • Permanent On keeps the lights on all night long
  • Smart Brightness Control Mode allows the light to stay on all night but turns brighter when it senses motion

I use the smart brightness control to preserve battery life while providing sufficient illumination and keeping away potential intruders.

The IP65 waterproofing is enough to make your lights withstand winter’s heavy snowfall and summer’s scorching heat.

Last Christmas, my lights endured a severe snowstorm that covered the entire neighborhood in a thick blanket of snow and kept shining without issues.

However, the battery capacity of 2,200mAh was a bit higher to extend the runtime of the lights.

When I tracked their performance, I found that the lights lasted about 6 hours on a full charge, consuming an average of 366mAh per hour

While this provides decent runtime, a higher battery capacity would be better, especially during extended periods of low sunlight or cloudy days.

Despite this issue, I still find that Aootek Solar Powered Security Lights are a reliable choice for their compact size, high brightness, and high-security level.

What We Like

  • Sufficient brightness of 2,500 lumens output
  • 3 distinct Lighting Modes
  • Easy installation process
  • IP65 Waterproof Rating

What We Don’t Like

  • The battery capacity could be bigger
  • The plastic housing is fragile and easily damaged
  • Lack of a long-term warranty, only a 30-day return policy

Best for Walkway: AloftSun Solar Security Light

Features

  • Material: Plastic
  • Brightness: 800 lumens
  • Light Coverage: 343 ft²
  • Charge Time: 6-8 hours
  • Run Time: Up to 24 hours
  • Sensing Distance: 33 ft
  • Waterproofing: IP68

Now, let’s look at another solar light that has significantly improved the safety and ambiance of my home – the AloftSun Solar Security Light.

Suited ideally for walkways, it combines a high brightness of 800 lumens and 30 LEDs nestled in a convex refractor shell that ensures an even spread of light.

I use 2 units of these lights for my 60-foot walkway leading to my front porch, one at each 30-foot interval to provide full coverage along the entire walkway.

Before I used this light, we had a dimly lit path with a single porch light that hardly reached beyond the first few feet.

Now, I’ve measured the lighting and found that it’s bright enough to comfortably read a book anywhere along the walkway – something I’d never imagined being able to do outdoors at night.

This model also offers a Dim Light No Motion Sensor Mode, a Medium Light Stay-on Mode, and a High Light Motion Sensor Mode.

I found the High Light Motion Sensor Mode the most beneficial for my needs.

This mode only triggers the light to its full intensity when motion is detected, thus saving energy when there’s no one around.

I’ve also noticed that it’s incredibly sensitive, able to detect movement up to 33 feet away within a 120-degree angle

This means it turns on just in time as I, or any visitor, begin to approach the walkway, lighting up the path ahead.

The AloftSun also boasts a charge time of just 6-8 hours, thanks to its high-efficiency black monocrystalline silicon solar panel that can achieve up to 26.8% conversion rate.

I tested its performance on different lighting modes and found that even on the longest days, the light is in operation for close to 12 hours

This is perfect for my needs as my walkway sees quite a bit of traffic – on average, the High Light Motion Sensor mode gets activated around 20 times daily.

This light has 2 installation methods: inserting them into the ground using the included stakes or mounting them onto the wall with the provided screws.

I opted for the ground mount option since I don’t have a tall structure or wall near my walkway that would provide enough height for the lights.

However, if you have a fence, wall, or even a tall enough tree near your walkway, mounting them on such structures can cast a wider light spread.

The waterproofing rate of IP68 means that the light can handle anything from drizzles to torrential downpours, as well as dust, dirt, and snow.

I’ve had these lights up and running flawlessly during the weather changes of spring and even the harsh winter months.

In fact, after a stormy night last winter that saw nearly 2 inches of rainfall, the lights were still glowing strong and steady all night.

The only setback for me with this model was that the sturdy stakes weren’t ideal for installation in certain types of soil or terrain.

This can be a problem for people like me who can’t use the wall-mount option due to the architectural constraints of our property.

Overall, the AloftSun Solar Security Light has surpassed my expectations regarding performance and energy efficiency, making it an invaluable addition to my home’s outdoor lighting setup.

What We Like

  • A good brightness level of 800 lumens output
  • Up to 343 ft² light coverage
  • 3 distinct Lighting Modes
  • Up to 24 hours of run time
  • Up to 33 ft sensing distance
  • IP68 Waterproof Rating

What We Don’t Like

  • Stakes may not work well in certain soils or terrains

Best for Garages: Richarm Solar Security Lights

Features

  • Material: Aluminum, plastic & metal
  • Brightness: 500 lumens
  • Light Coverage: 430 ft²
  • Charge Time: 6-8 hours
  • Run Time: Up to 10 hours
  • Waterproofing: IP65

Richarm Solar Security Lights come packed with a brightness of 500 lumens across 42 LED chips, transforming any formerly shadowy garage into a well-lit space.

The LEDs spread the light beams with an angle of 120 degrees, providing extensive coverage of up to 430 ft².

I have a 320 ft² garage in my home that I use for parking my car and my DIY projects and storage, so I installed one unit of this model.

It is enough to brighten up every corner of my garage, ensuring clear visibility for all my activities, whether working on my DIY projects or finding items in storage.

This light also comes with a remote control, allowing me to adjust the brightness and settings without manually interacting with the unit.

You can adjust the brightness and preset the lighting duration for 2, 4, or 6 hours

I usually set them on the motion sensor mode to light up for 4 hours after dusk.

This provides enough lighting for the evening without draining the battery or bothering my neighbors with excessive light during the late hours.

And when I pull in with my car, the motion sensor mode instantly detects my arrival from up to 20 feet away and within a 60-degree angle.

This makes me feel safe as the light will burst into its full 500 lumens brightness whenever it detects any movement, notifying me of any potential activity or presence near my garage entrance.

The installation process of this model is so flexible. It comes with a 16.4 ft cable, enabling you to install the lamp in a dark place and mount the solar panel in a location that gets direct sunlight.

For my setup, I installed the lights inside my garage and positioned the solar panel on the roof to catch the sunlight.

I also love the 90-angle adjustable wall mount bracket. It allows me to easily position the light in the best direction, ensuring optimal coverage and focusing it where I need it most.

The combination of aluminum, plastic, and metal in the construction of this light, along with its IP65 waterproofing rating, allows it to stand against whatever Mother Nature throws its way.

One drawback of this model is the 17% conversion rate of the solar panel, which means the light takes longer to charge fully and requires more exposure to sunlight compared to models with higher conversion rates.

When I tracked my light’s performance, I found that it took approximately 10-12 hours of direct sunlight to achieve a full charge, which was longer than I initially expected.

However, once fully charged, the lights provided consistent illumination for up to 8 hours, sufficient for my evening activities in the garage.

Anyways, I am satisfied with the performance and functionality of this light due to its brightness, extensive coverage, remote control feature, and durable construction.

What We Like

  • A good brightness level of 500 lumens output
  • Up to 430 ft² light coverage
  • Flexible and easy installation
  • IP65 Waterproof Rating

What We Don’t Like

  • Lower solar panel conversion rate
  • Lack of a long-term warranty, only a 30-day return policy

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Solar Flood Lights?

1. Light Brightness

The lumens rating is the measure of brightness for any light. The higher the lumen rating, the brighter your light will be, and vice versa.

The level of brightness you need largely depends on the specific use of the solar flood light.

For example, if you want to illuminate a medium area like a doorstep or a garden walkway, you might consider something like the AloftSun Solar Security Light

But, suppose you’re aiming to light up a larger area, such as a dark alley or a broad driveway.

In that case, you would require something with a higher lumen count like the NIORSUN Solar Security Lights.

This is why I listed various options with different lumen outputs in this guide, so you can select the perfect lighting solution for your needs.

2. Light Coverage

There are two factors that affect the coverage area of your solar arena lights – beam angle and number of LEDs.

The beam angle is the degree of width that light emits from the source.

A small beam angle will generate a focused spotlight, which is ideal for highlighting specific areas or objects.

On the other hand, a large beam angle will spread the light across a broader area, illuminating larger spaces but with less intensity.

Therefore, you should balance the beam angle and the number of LEDs based on your specific needs.

I actually recommend you opt for lights with a beam angle of at least 120 degrees for a balanced and wide distribution of light.

3. Motion Sensor Detection Range

The motion sensor detection range determines how far the sensor can identify movement, thus triggering the light.

Detection ranges can vary quite a bit among different lights.

Some models might have a range as short as 16 feet, while others can detect motion up to 30 feet away, or even more in certain high-end models.

However, the design and layout of the space you’re looking to secure will impact what detection range is suitable.

For example, if you’re planning to secure a small garden or pathway, a smaller detection range could be more appropriate.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to monitor a larger area like a big backyard or a long driveway, then you would be better off with a light that has a larger detection range.

Another factor to consider is the field of view of the sensor. This determines the width of the area the sensor can monitor.

Some sensors can monitor motion across a full 160 degrees, while others may have a more narrow field of view.

If you’re securing a narrow passage or alleyway, a sensor with a more narrow field of view might suffice.

However, if you’re securing a large, open area like a backyard or parking lot, a sensor with a wider detection range would be better.

4. Charge Time

The charge time refers to the amount of time a solar light takes to fully charge its batteries from sunlight.

This can vary greatly between different models, depending on the efficiency and the size of the solar panels.

The larger and more efficient the solar panel, the quicker it absorbs sunlight and converts it into energy to power the light.

This is why I was careful to select lights that offer you at least 1 hour for every single hour of direct sunlight.

5. Run Time

There are two factors that affect the run time of a solar motion sensor security light: the battery capacity and the number of LEDs.

Solar lights store energy from the sun in a rechargeable battery during the day, which is then used to power the light when it gets dark.

Therefore, the larger the battery’s capacity, the longer the light will be able to run.

On the other hand, the more LEDs the unit has, or the higher the brightness setting, the faster it will consume power.

However, you should know that the advertised run time is the maximum time the model can last so take the numbers with a grain of salt.

So, I’ve tested every model I included in this guide to make sure that all of them offer at least 6-8 hours after a full charge.

6. Material & Quality

The material of solar motion sensor security lights determines their quality and ability to withstand harsh weather conditions.

Materials like aluminum or stainless steel can withstand exposure to various weather conditions, including rain, snow, humidity, and UV rays.

Plastic can also withstand moderate rain, snow, and humidity exposure without easily deteriorating or becoming brittle.

However, it’s important to note that plastic may not have the same strength and longevity as aluminum or stainless steel materials.

I’ve tested each model on this list, and I can assure you that all of them are made of quality materials that won’t break during installation or shipping.

7. Waterproofing Rate

Any outdoor lighting, including solar security lights, should have a reliable waterproofing rate to ensure their performance and longevity in wet conditions.

The waterproofing rate is measured using the IP (Ingress Protection) rating system, followed by two digits.

The first digit indicates the level of protection against solid particles, while the second digit represents the level of protection against moisture and water.

Here are a few examples:

  • IP65: This rating offers complete protection against dust and can withstand low-pressure water jets, making it suitable for heavy rain.
  • IP66: This rating means the light is completely protected against dust and powerful jets of water from any direction.
  • IP67: A light with this rating is fully protected against dust and can resist immersion in water between 15 cm and 1 meter.
  • IP68: A light with this rating is fully dustproof and can withstand continuous submersion in water, making it highly durable even in adverse weather conditions.

Considering the outdoor nature, I recommend not settling for a solar security light with less than an IP65 rating

Anything lower might not hold up well under heavy rainfall or prolonged exposure to the sun.

8. Warranty

Last but not least, you should always look for solar security lights that offer some sort of warranty.

The thing is, solar lights are exposed to outdoor elements and undergo constant charging and discharging cycles, which can put some strain on their components over time.

So, having a warranty gives you the assurance that if any issues arise with the light during the specified warranty period, you can get it repaired or replaced at no additional cost.

That’s why in this guide, I’ve made it a priority to only include solar security lights that offer at least a 1-year warranty or a 30-day money-back guarantee
